Earthly sketches

some drawings from last winter

Annie Costello Brown

My cousin just started working for her and introduced her work to me (she scored me some rad earrings too!) ACB works with fabric, stones, pearls, chains and leather. I'm especially a fan of her fringe, knotted, and triangle pieces.

now M.I.A. too?

Apparently she too has started her own fashion line, called Oakley Run, the name inspired by this kid (which is pretty cool), which features different pieces that have her infamous prints on them. You too can look...exactly like her...ugh

I do respect that previous to being famous as a musician, she was a visual artist and from this I believe has designed those prints herself (along with Cassette Playa and perhaps Steve Loveridge). And I am impressed that she does so much (songwriting, record producing, singing, visual art now fashion designing). Despite this, there's seems to be no creativity in this, its just a commercial move, an extension of her fan tees really. People wanted it and now its available on Karmaloop. I liked it better when her steez was a collaboration of vintage windbreakers, original pieces by BL, herself, and Cassette Playa...and all of this wasn't condensed and easily bought online.

Artwork on records is a little played out...but

A friend wanted some records worked on for her wall, a few of us made some, here is mine

Annika Berger | SKYWARD

I love hearing of fashion designers who didn't study fashion, Swedish designer Annika Berger of SKYWARD did just that. She studied engineering, industrial and graphic design before making her way into clothing design. I eerily relate to what she says about her artistic process in a article by dazeddigital.com:

"I am constantly searching for what make me think “I like it! What is it?” Something I couldn’t quite recognise but still there are references that appeal to me. Could be anything, something I see pass by, a person I meet. From that, I start fantasising about it in a different context. I am very attracted to opposites, and putting them together. Urban with nature for example. The final result has often a lot to do with accident as well. My way of working vary between very concentrated, slow and careful, to extremely spontanous and fast working out sudden ideas. I like to build fantasies around fashion, have a strong idea, build a special world around it. To me, fashion is all about imagination. And dreams are really the only things that can bring you forward and make a difference."

Her look book is straight out of editorial pages: artistic, representative of her concepts...mindblowing
